Children’s ministries for preschool through fifth grade are overseen by Jessica Gobel, OUMC Director of Children’s Ministries (firstname.lastname@example.org or 608-783-3380 x25). Onalaska UMC has a Safe Sanctuaries Policy which protects our children and youth.
Onalaska UMC has a staffed nursery available during all regularly-scheduled worship services and Sunday School for infants and toddlers through age 4. The nursery (room 204) is located on the main floor down the long hallway from the sanctuary. Changing tables are available in the nursery.
Younger students have Sunday School classes during the school year from 9:45-10:45am each Sunday. The elementary-aged children begin Sunday School gathered as a group for fellowship and music, before going to their classrooms. Once per month, the kids attend “Discoveries of Faith,” a stepping stones program with specific age-related studies. For example, third graders study bible skills, and fifth graders learn about being United Methodist.
Sunday School at OUMC also has several “special” programs throughout the school year. In early December, all children have the chance to perform in a Christmas pageant. January brings a unit about Occupations, where members from the congregation share information about their job/hobby and relate it to their faith journey and how they are doing “God’s work.” There are also other mission opportunities throughout the year the children are encouraged to participate in.
During the summer months, we offer children’s church during both services. Kids ages 5-11 attend the regular worship service with their parents and grandparents, then are dismissed following the kids’ moment to the Art Room (206), where they can enjoy an age-appropriate lesson, crafts, and other activities.
Volunteers help with this ministry. Sign up here to assist with one or more sessions. In accordance with our Safe Sanctuaries Policy, a background check will be required if you haven’t helped at church before.
This summer’s VBS is Maker Fun Factory. Imagine a world where curious kids become hands-on inventors who discover they’re lovingly crafted by God! Learn more and register here. VBS is scheduled for Sunday, July 30 through Thursday, August 3, 2017. The cost is $10 per child, or $25 max for a family. Scholarships are available; let us know if you need assistance.
Vacation Bible School is always fun at OUMC! Our summer VBS program offers kids a week of adventure. We welcome all kids to join us, whether they attend OUMC or not. A light dinner is usually served at 4:45pm, with the program running 5:00-7:30pm. Parents and friends are invited to join us each day at 7:15pm for the closing celebration.
We always need LOTS of help from parents and friends to make VBS a success. Online registration and volunteer sign-up is available a month or two before the event.
